An article from the Hollywood Reporter has just published Uma Thurman sharing her “darkest secret”: the Hollywood actress had an abortion in her late teens. THR cited the reason the revelation was, hopefully, “that some light would shine, reaching women and girls who might be ashamed of not being able to protect themselves and have no agency on them.” .
May his darkest secret shed much needed light.
Texas’ new law gives any private citizen the right to sue an abortion provider, as well as anyone else who helps a woman get an abortion. Imagine being an innocent Uber driver. Or worse, a rape victim, subject to this law.
In his Washington Post editorial, Thurman shares his own take on the ban, writing that its successful implementation is “largely due to its lack of ideological diversity, [and] is the terrain of a human rights crisis for American women. ”
It doesn’t stop there.
Uma Thurman condemned Texas’ new abortion law and said her heart was broken for women in the state, revealing that she … https://t.co/LxFlTe24Rs

“This law is another discriminatory tool against those who are economically disadvantaged, and often, indeed, against their partners … Women and children of wealthy families retain all the choices in the world and run little risk. mourning., thus, that the law opposes citizen against citizen, creating new vigilantes who will attack these disadvantaged women, denying them the choice not to have children whom they are not equipped to take care of, or extinguishing their hopes for the future family they might choose. ”
Thurman, 51, is a mother of three. A choice she made after being able to provide a stable home. When she was ready. When she selected.
Thurman offers a poignant conclusion in the THR article: âTo all of you, the women and girls of Texas, who fear being traumatized and stalked by predatory bounty hunters; to all women indignant at seeing the rights of our bodies withdrawn by the state; and to all of you who are made vulnerable and subjected to shame because you have a womb, I say: I see you. Have courage. You are beautiful. You remind me of my daughters.
Uma Thurman is not the only one to have this “secret”. In the coming weeks, there will be other celebrities, other female CEOs, other liberals, other conservatives, other former (even current) pro-life, who will share this same story. And maybe, as we’ve seen with the #MeToo movement, the collective power of women in solidarity will tip the scales in favor of those Uma defends.
