Sylva- The NC State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation recently donated $18,000 to Southwestern Community College to financially assist students enrolling in continuing workforce education programs.
Thirty different students will receive $500 scholarships to enroll in short-term manpower programs leading to state- or industry-recognized degrees, such as Basic Law Enforcement, the emergency medical technician, real estate, phlebotomy or nurse aide.
To be eligible for funding, students must be North Carolina residents who are unemployed – or underemployed – adults, military veterans, or members of the National Guard.
“We are extremely grateful to the SECU Foundation for providing a brighter future for so many of our students,” said Scott Sutton, Dean of Continuing Workforce Education at CSC. “A lot of people want to change careers but just don’t have the financial resources right now, so these scholarships will make a huge difference.”
Funds can be used to offset registration fees, required books, uniforms, instructional materials, transportation, childcare, and accreditation.
After receiving the award, recipients are tracked to determine number of degrees earned, entry into employment, and enrollment in graduate school.
