FBI agents think there’s enough evidence to charge Hunter Biden: report

JFederal agents investigating Hunter Biden believe they have uncovered enough evidence to charge President Joe Biden’s son with crimes related to tax evasion and lying while purchasing a handgun, according to a new report.

FBI agents conducting the criminal investigation concluded months ago that the facts supported the federal charges against Hunter Biden, according to the Washington Postbut it is up to US Attorney David Weiss, the Delaware prosecutor handling the case, to decide whether or not to charge the president’s son.

The outlet said Thursday that the federal investigation into Hunter Biden initially focused on Hunter Biden’s business dealings and consulting work in places such as China and Ukraine, but that “over time , investigators from multiple agencies focused on whether he failed to report all of his income and whether he lied on gun purchase paperwork in 2018, according to people familiar with the situation.

In February 2021, Joe Biden called on all US Senate-verified attorneys appointed by Trump to resign, except for Weiss. John Durham was asked to step down as U.S. attorney for Connecticut, but continued as special counsel.

Hunter Biden revealed he was under federal investigation for his taxes shortly after the 2020 election, saying, “I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I have managed my affairs in a legal and proper manner, including with the benefit of professional tax. advisers. »

He has also reportedly come under scrutiny for potential money laundering, as well as possible foreign lobbying violations under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Hunter Biden controversially held a lucrative position on the board of Ukrainian energy giant Burisma when his father was vice president. He also made business deals in China and elsewhere during and after his father’s tenure. Hunter Biden has reaped millions through these associations.

Records show that Hunter believed some of his Chinese business partners were linked to Chinese intelligence services and that he was concerned about the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The senses. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) have called on the Justice Department and the FBI to launch a full investigation into Hunter Biden’s laptop, including the revelation uncovered by the Washington Examiner that Joe Biden apparently unwittingly funded his son’s participation in a Russian-linked escort ring.

Hunter Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, told the Washington Post that he wanted the Justice Department to investigate the leaks in response to the outlet’s story.

“It is a federal crime for a federal agent to disclose information about a Grand Jury investigation like this,” Clark said. “Any agent you cite as a source in your article has apparently committed such a crime. We expect the Department of Justice to diligently investigate and prosecute these bad actors.”

Clark also said he had “had no contact” with a federal investigating officer.

“Therefore, an interpretation of the case by such an ‘agent’ is inherently biased, one-sided and inaccurate,” Clark said. “It is unfortunate that law enforcement officers appear to be breaking the law to prejudice a case against a person who is a target simply because of their last name.”

Copies of Hunter Biden’s gun transaction record dated October 12, 2018 would show Hunter Biden answering “no” to a question on the transaction record that asked, “Are you an illegal user or addicted to marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic or other controlled substance?”

Lying on the gun form is a potential crime. The Government Accountability Office has reported that prosecutions for lying on a form are rare, but such prosecutions do occur.

Hunter Biden and his family have publicly discussed his drug addiction history and memoir, Pretty Things, discussed his use of illegal drugs before, during and after this period. His laptop hard drive also contains extensive evidence of illicit drug use, such as crack. The purchase of firearms by the president’s son came five years after he was released from the naval reserve after testing positive for cocaine.

Hunter Biden’s .38 caliber revolver was thrown in the trash near a Delaware high school in October 2018 by his sister-in-law Hallie Biden, with whom he had a romantic relationship. He berated Hallie Biden, his brother Beau’s widow, after police responded, and he accused her of ruining his life.

Investigators likely also looked into Hunter Biden’s business partnership with former CEFC chairman Ye Jianming and his top lieutenant Patrick Ho during a time when the Chinese company sought business opportunities in the United States and around the world.

Ye has since disappeared in China after Chinese state media linked him to a corruption case in 2018 which led to CEFC going bankrupt.

Ho was sentenced to three years in prison in March 2019 for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The case against Ho revealed that some evidence was obtained through the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

The first call Ho made after his 2017 arrest was to James Biden, who is Hunter’s uncle and Joe Biden’s brother. James said he thought Ho’s call was for Hunter. Hunter entered into a $1 million legal warrant agreement with Ho after his arrest.

Hunter Biden called Ho “China’s goddamn spy chief” in a 47-minute audio recording dated May 11, 2018, found on a copy of his abandoned laptop.

Dozens of Senate Republicans have said Weiss should have special protections and authorities, and dozens of House Republicans have called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel for the investigation.

“He’s overseeing the investigation,” Garland said of Weiss in April during a Senate hearing. “There will be no interference of any political or improper kind.”

Garland added, “I am completely comfortable with the United States Attorney for this district continuing in the role he is playing,” when asked if a special counsel was needed.
