A Lion-Hearted Legend: Russell Crowe's Tribute to Radio Icon John Laws
In a heartfelt eulogy, movie star Russell Crowe paid tribute to the late radio icon John Laws, describing him as possessing the "heart of a lion." Crowe's words resonated deeply as he spoke at Sydney's St. Andrew's Cathedral, capturing the essence of Laws' impact on those around him.
"The first time I met John, he made me feel like he believed in me," Crowe shared. "That's a gift often overlooked—the power to instill confidence in others."
Laws, affectionately known as the "Golden Tonsils," passed away peacefully at the age of 90 in his Woolloomooloo home, leaving behind a legacy that spanned decades.
Beginning his career at Bendigo's 3BO in 1953, Laws spent an astonishing 71 years in the radio industry, primarily at Sydney's 2UE and 2SM. His iconic golden microphone, a symbol of his influence, lay next to his casket as mourners gathered to bid him farewell.
Despite their differing views on various issues, Crowe emphasized the bond they shared: "We always made each other laugh." Crowe recalled their last conversations, centered around Crowe's project, Nuremberg, which Laws took a keen interest in.
"He was my neighbor, a mischievous friend, and a kind soul," Crowe said, reflecting on their friendship. "His critics might point out the irony of his invective-laden opinions and stern interviews with politicians, but expressing his views was John's gift and his therapy. For his loyal listeners, it became theirs too."
Crowe continued, "Through self-expression, he discovered new truths and embraced different perspectives. He gave a voice to the voiceless, welcomed antagonists at his table, and questioned the structure of causes he believed in. That was his unique talent."
Crowe shared a lighthearted moment, recalling Laws bringing whiskey to his son's birthday party and the joke about participating in the service. "John once asked me to speak at his funeral, and I said yes. Little did I know he'd keep living!"
Among the attendees were notable figures like former Prime Minister John Howard and swimmer Dawn Fraser. Television personality Richard Wilkins, singer Marcia Hines, and Barnaby Joyce were also present, along with singer-songwriter John Williamson, who performed his iconic song "True Blue."
Paul Warren, a friend of Laws for 55 years, spoke of his resilience, having battled polio twice, and his reach to over two million listeners across 100 radio stations. "He fought back, rebuilt, and that determination carried him through life. He could do it all—write songs, sing, make albums, even appear in films, and once, I think, on Skippy!"
"John shaped public opinion and political thought like no other," Warren added. "He interviewed 16 prime ministers and countless premiers, leaving them all aware of his sharp mind and quick wit."
But to those who knew him personally, he was simply "John"—a man who lived life on his own terms, entertaining, challenging, and inspiring.
"He left an indelible mark, not just on broadcasting, but on everyone fortunate enough to have crossed his path," Warren concluded.
The funeral is expected to draw around 800 attendees, including NSW Premier Chris Minns and broadcasters Ben Fordham and Ray Hadley. Shock jock Kyle Sandilands expressed his decision not to attend or watch online, stating, "It's too emotional. I feel like I've lost a grandfather. He's been a constant presence in my life for a long time. It's very sad."
As the tribute continues, Laws' impact on the industry and those he touched becomes even more evident. A true legend, his memory lives on through the stories and impact he left behind.
