France Tops Pool F | Australia Faces Worst Finish in Junior Hockey World Cup History (2025)

A shocker in world hockey — France storms to the top, while Australia slips to its worst-ever finish.

Few expected this outcome when Australia landed at the FIH Junior Men's Hockey World Cup brimming with confidence and lofty ambitions. Yet, the team that once reigned as 1997 champions is now battling for placements between 9th and 16th — the lowest ranking in its 12 tournament appearances. How did a powerhouse nation find itself here?

Despite a convincing 3–1 victory over South Korea at Chennai’s SDAT–Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Tuesday, the result wasn’t enough. Australia finished with six points in Pool F but suffered the heartbreak of elimination because of an inferior goal difference of -1 compared to other second-place contenders. In the cruel mathematics of tournament hockey, even one missed chance can change everything.

South Korea didn’t make things easy either. The match unfolded in non-stop rain that hampered both teams, especially during penalty corners. Still, the Koreans pushed the Aussies hard in every quarter, showing resilience even as the scoreboard drifted away from them.

Earlier in the day, France — a nation often seen as the dark horse of international hockey — had already sealed the group’s fate. Their gritty 3–2 win over debutants Bangladesh marked their third consecutive victory and locked them atop Pool F, leaving Australia out of quarterfinal contention.

But here’s the twist: Many had expected France to dominate Bangladesh effortlessly after their strong performance against Australia. Instead, the Bangladeshi debutants defied predictions with fearless defending and bursts of creative attack that kept fans on edge. Their effort was not just commendable — it was eye-opening. They forced even top teams to respect their game plan and earned widespread admiration for their spirited play.

Australian head coach Jay Stacy didn’t sugarcoat his frustration when speaking after the elimination. “This clearly isn’t the campaign we envisioned,” he admitted. “We came here aiming to win it all, but the cards didn’t fall our way.”

Stacy revealed that part of the challenge lay in preparation. “We have a robust development pipeline back home, but this particular group hadn’t trained together before the tournament. It’s a different squad from the one that lifted the Sultan of Johor Cup in October. Our focus has always been on evolving and ensuring new talent gets opportunities,” he explained.

Showing gracious sportsmanship, he also acknowledged Bangladesh’s impressive rise. “They gave several teams, us included, a tough fight. And Amirul Islam — he’s not just a skillful drag-flicker but also a standout defender,” Stacy noted.

With the group stages concluded, Chennai will now play host to the quarterfinals and the 9th–16th place playoffs, while Madurai will stage the 17th–24th classification battles. Both venues will pause Wednesday with no scheduled matches, giving teams a much-needed breather before the final stretch begins.

Match results, Pool F:
- France 3 (Tom Gaillard 6', Gabin Lorrazuri 31', James Liddiard 37') defeated Bangladesh 2 (Md. Abdullah 27', Amirul Islam 54')
- Australia 3 (Duncan Jackson 16', Ian Grobbelaar 34', Daykin Stanger 52') defeated South Korea 1 (Seunghan Son 20')

And here’s a question to leave you thinking: Does Australia’s early exit signal a deeper shift in global hockey power — or is this just a rare misstep for a traditional giant? Share your thoughts in the comments — this one will spark debate.
