Dayan Viciedo's NPB Journey: From Chunichi Dragons to Yokohama DeNA BayStars (2025)

Dayan Viciedo: A Second Act in Yokohama

It's never too late for a comeback, especially in the world of baseball! Veteran infielder Dayan Viciedo has just signed a contract with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars for the 2026 season. This marks another chapter in the career of a player who has seen both the highs and lows of professional baseball.

Viciedo, now 36 years old, is a Cuban slugger who initially made his mark in the MLB with the Chicago White Sox. He played for them across parts of five seasons from 2010 to 2014. He was once a highly touted prospect, known for his impressive hitting in the Cuban National Series before defecting to the majors. His debut with the White Sox in 2010 was promising; in just 38 games, he hit .308/.321/.519 in 106 plate appearances. This early success hinted at a bright future.

But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the initial promise, Viciedo struggled to find consistency in the big leagues. Over three seasons as a regular, his stats dipped to .250/.294/.425 with a wRC+ of 95. While he showed glimpses of power, consistently hitting 20 home runs, his free-swinging approach led to a low walk rate of just 5.3% during his regular seasons. This, coupled with his defensive struggles in the outfield, led the White Sox to release him before the 2015 season.

After a brief stint in the A's and White Sox farm systems, Viciedo made the jump to Japan's NPB, joining the Chunichi Dragons in 2016. And this is the part most people miss... He found success overseas. Over 1001 NPB games, he hit .287/.352/.458 with 141 career homers. However, in recent years, his performance began to decline. After difficult seasons with the Dragons in 2023 and 2024, Viciedo moved to the Mexican League's Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos. In 38 games, he showed a return to form, hitting .276/.359/.462 with eight homers.

That performance caught the attention of the BayStars, leading to his signing in July to finish the 2025 season in Japan. He hit .259/.322/.383 in 43 games in the Central League last year. Now, returning for a full season in 2026, Viciedo aims to re-establish himself in the NPB. He will be playing alongside former big leaguers Mike Ford, Tyler Austin, and Yoshi Tsutsugo. While he primarily played the outfield in the majors, he's been a first baseman in the NPB, likely filling a first base/DH role for the BayStars in 2026.

What do you think? Will Viciedo's experience in the NPB help him succeed with the BayStars? Do you think his move to the Mexican League helped him find his form? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
