Artificial Intelligence: Climate Savior or Environmental Villain?
The world is buzzing about artificial intelligence (AI), but its role in the fight against climate change is sparking heated debates at COP30 in Brazil. Is AI the key to unlocking a sustainable future, or a double-edged sword that could exacerbate our environmental woes?
Tech giants and forward-thinking nations are championing AI as a powerful tool to combat global warming. Imagine AI optimizing power grids, predicting weather patterns for farmers, tracking endangered species in the deep sea, and designing resilient infrastructure to withstand extreme weather events. But here's where it gets controversial: while AI promises revolutionary solutions, its growing appetite for energy and water is raising red flags among environmental advocates.
Climate groups are sounding the alarm about the environmental footprint of AI's data centers, which guzzle electricity and water at an alarming rate. They argue that unchecked AI development could derail our progress towards the Paris Agreement goals. And this is the part most people miss: the very technology hailed as a savior could become a significant contributor to the problem it aims to solve.
Jean Su, from the Center for Biological Diversity, paints a stark picture: “AI right now is a completely unregulated beast around the world.” In contrast, Adam Elman from Google sees AI as a “real enabler” already making a positive impact. Despite their differing views, both agree on one thing: AI is here to stay.
The interest in AI at COP30 is palpable, with numerous sessions dedicated to its applications. From AI-powered energy sharing between cities to predicting forest crimes and awarding innovative projects, the potential seems limitless. Michal Nachmany, founder of Climate Policy Radar, captures the sentiment: “Everyone is also a little bit scared. The potential is huge and the risks are huge as well.”
AI is no longer a fringe topic at the United Nations. Nitin Arora, leading the Global Innovation Hub, notes that AI dominates discussions on scalable solutions. A prototype app called NegotiateCOP, designed by Johannes Jacob, is helping smaller delegations navigate the complexities of COP negotiations, leveling the playing field.
During a panel, representatives from Google and Nvidia highlighted AI's potential to transform the power sector. While Google's Elman emphasized responsible development, Nvidia's Josh Parker declared AI the “best resource any of us can have,” praising its democratizing power. Princess Abze Djigma from Burkina Faso sees AI as a “breakthrough in digitalization,” while Bjorn-Soren Gigler of the European Commission acknowledges its dual nature: a tool of immense opportunity and ethical concern.
The environmental impact of AI's data centers is undeniable. The International Energy Agency reports that data centers consumed around 1.5% of global electricity in 2024, with their energy use growing at four times the rate of total electricity consumption. This surge in energy demand, coupled with water consumption in water-stressed regions, threatens to undermine climate goals. Su warns that unchecked data center growth will increase emissions, particularly in the U.S., historically the world’s largest polluter.
Environmental groups at COP30 are pushing for stricter regulations, such as public interest tests for data centers and mandates for 100% renewable energy on-site. “COP can not only view AI as some type of techno solution, it has to understand the deep climate consequences,” Su urges.
