On November 17, 2025, the National Council for Culture, Arts, and Letters (NCCAL) announced a series of remarkable discoveries at Bahra 1 in Subiya, northern Kuwait. Among the findings were over 20 ancient kilns, estimated to be around 7,700 years old, and remnants of locally cultivated barley dating back 7,500 years. These discoveries provide a window into the daily lives of a community that thrived thousands of years ago.
Mohammed bin Reda, from NCCAL, described Bahra 1 as a key link to the Ubaid culture, dating back to approximately 5700 BCE. He emphasized that the artifacts offer a vivid snapshot of ancient daily life, including ornament-making techniques and the use of ground-penetrating radar to uncover more buried treasures.
Dr. Hassan Ashkanani, an Assistant Professor of Archaeology, highlighted the significance of these new discoveries in understanding the development of early local communities in Subiya. He mentioned previous findings of seashell-crafted jewelry workshops, which, combined with the latest discoveries, paint a more complete picture.
Dr. Agnieszka Binkowska, Deputy Director of the Polish excavation team, added that their work provides valuable insights into everyday practices, food preparation methods, and the unique use of wild plants and bitumen in pottery production.
Professor Anna Smogorzewska further emphasized the importance of the newly discovered pottery items and the local pottery workshop, deeming them among the most significant archaeological achievements at the site in recent years.
