The £7 billion East West Rail project is undergoing a major redesign, with over 80 changes being implemented. This overhaul includes the addition of new stations, entrances, and a completely revised service pattern, transforming the project's core. One of the most significant changes is the replacement of nine outdated stations on the Marston Vale Line with four modern, larger stations. Stewartby will gain a new station strategically located to serve Universal Studios' proposed theme park. Additionally, the project introduces several new and updated stations, such as Cambridge East, Cambourne (EWR), Stewartby, Woburn Sands, Ridgmont, Lidlington, Tempsford, and a new eastern entrance at Cambridge station with an active travel hub. Bletchley station is also set to receive a new eastern entrance, pending third-party funding. The project aims to alleviate pressure on the central station in Cambridge and unlock new growth areas for rail. Design tweaks in Oxford support the reinstatement of the Cowley Branch Line, enhancing capacity at Oxford station. Further east, the proposed Tempsford station will feature a southern entrance, linked to government-backed new town plans. The East Coast Main Line phase is being fast-tracked to keep pace with development pressures. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasizes the project's role as a catalyst for growth, jobs, and opportunity, promising faster, greener, and more reliable rail travel for millions of passengers. The project will undergo another round of consultation in the New Year before submitting a full Development Consent Order (DCO) next spring or summer.
